Homeowner Profile: Debbie and Mark Ray
Both native Texans, Debbie and Mark relocated to Santa Fe from Boston, their home of 32 years, in 2015. Since they had spent many summer vacations in Santa Fe, the decision to settle there for retirement was an easy one.
Prior to building their home with Woods Design Builders, they owned a property in town off of Upper Canyon Road. Because their historic east side home was small, they knew they would ultimately need a larger space to accommodate friends and family. When they were unable to find a preexisting home to meet their needs, they decided to build.
The Ray’s home sits on a 1.5-acre lot overlooking the lake at Jack Nicklaus Signature Sunrise course, Hole No. 4 in Las Campanas. The house is 4,500 heated square feet with portals, or outdoor patios, that allow them to enjoy the outdoors and beautiful weather year-round. There are three bedrooms and 3.5 baths in the main house along with a one-bedroom, one bath casita. The combined great room and dining room overlook the lake on the golf course and provide ample room for entertaining. The hearth room, or family area off of the kitchen, is a cozy space for relaxing and eating. The home has a total of 6 fireplaces, including one outdoors and one in the casita. There are also fireplaces in the entry, great room, master bedroom, and hearth room.
Anticipating visits from their two grown children as well as other family and friends, Debbie and Mark wanted to build a home with comfortable spaces for people to congregate. The kitchen and hearth room provide just that, with a central area for guests to simultaneously relax, watch television, and help with meal preparations.
For most people the journey to find the right builder can be difficult. Not so for the Rays. They considered the choice neither difficult nor a journey since Woods Design Builders was the first and only builder they considered. Recommended to Woods by their interior designers at Violante and Rochford, Debbie and Mark immediately felt a connection with the Woods team and didn’t spend time looking for alternatives.
Building a home is a challenging and often anxiety-ridden process. In Mark’s words, “Even though you start from scratch, hoping you will get everything you want, there are continual compromises. Managing that process is one of the many skills that Woods brought to the table. They are extremely talented in every phase of the design and building process, and it starts with the day you first meet Shane, Rob, and Sharon. The entire team is visionary and insightful, and their experience and education produces exceptional architectural outcomes. Debbie and Mark both agree “all in all, building a home with Woods Design Builders was an incredible experience with a very positive outcome. We love our home and made a lot of new friends along the way.”
